So I guess short forms of creative writing are a thing now. I wish I knew about this sooner, because there’s a lot of room for it on this blog. Some names for this type of writing (other than blogging, I suppose) include:
- prose poetry
- flash essays
- flash nonfiction
- concise nonfiction
A lot of my journaling could fall into these categories. There are some neat online resources and journals that publish these pieces. Here are a few of my favorite examples and a great list someone else put together:
. . . and an instruction guide I look forward to getting to know better.
Here’s one of my attempts at flash nonfiction, but I think I’ll try more of them! It’s probably more like prose poetry, but I have others I’m tinkering with. Do you have any to share?
The Wrath of Grapes
A seventh summer’s nearly over when I find the time to write this . . .
Each autumn, some misfortune found this home. 2006 was kidney stones. Then the loss of two uncles in two years. The guy next door died in 2009. Then a hurricane blew our power lines and grapes to the ground. They froze in the freak fall snow of 2011. Six times left unpicked. Forgotten.
In 2012, after many trials, our son was born. Thank God the plant was barren then. A close call.
Now the trellis is green and choked and tangled. It is heavy with fruit. What will keep us from this year’s harvest? Or, now that some good is growing, is this the last time the vine is left to drip and rot?
